Why Midlife Transitions Feel So Uncomfortable (And What to Do About It)

Midlife transitions are tough. They can leave us feeling stuck, lost, or untethered. Maybe your kids are leaving the nest. Maybe you’re thinking about retirement or making a big career change. Or maybe you’re just standing at a crossroads, wondering, “What’s next?”

Recently, I had the pleasure of talking with Rebecca Sutherns, an author and Midlife Transition Coach, on the Late Bloomer Living Podcast. Rebecca specializes in helping high-achieving women navigate life’s toughest transitions. And let me tell you, this conversation hit home in so many ways.

If you’re feeling stuck in the messy, in-between phase of midlife Rebecca’s insights may be just what you need.

Moving Forward Without Knowing What’s Next

Rebecca introduced me to the concept of liminal spaces—the uncomfortable, in-between stages where one identity is fading and a new one has yet to fully emerge. Think of it like standing in a hallway between two rooms, unsure of whether you should go back, rush forward, or simply stand still.

And here’s the thing: Even positive transitions can feel like losses. Raising kids to adulthood is an accomplishment worth celebrating, but when they leave, you’re left with a void that can feel bigger than you ever imagined.

Rebecca explained that our brains crave certainty. When life feels unpredictable, we tend to cling to the old or desperately try to leap into something new, even if we’re not ready. The good news? This discomfort is normal. And more importantly, it’s temporary.

She shares that midlife transitions may feel messy and confusing, but they also offer a beautiful opportunity to reinvent yourself.

Have you experienced the messy middle of midlife? What experiments are you willing to try to discover what’s next? Send me an email at [email protected] or reach out to me on social media @latebloomerliving —I’d love to hear your story.
